The hospitality sector in Spain billed more than 5.500 millions in 2017

The hotel and catering sector in Spain reached a turnover of 5.553,8 million euros in 2017, which implies an increase of 99.3 million compared to the previous year, according to the report ' the franchise in Spain 2018 ' prepared by the Spanish Association of Franchisors (AEF).

The report highlights that the Spanish hotel and restaurant industry is the second most important sector in the country, just behind the food. Currently there are 198 networks operating in this sector, 11 chains more than at the end of the year 2016. The sub-sectors of restaurants and hotels (with 65 chains) and fast food (with 45) have a special role.

Regarding the turnover of the aforementioned sub-sectors, the largest figure corresponds to the fast food (2.678,1 million euros), while the restaurants and hotels billed 2.243,6 millions.

With respect to the number of operating establishments that includes this activity, the figure is 8.659, six more than in 2016. By subsectors, fast food brands add up to 3.066 establishments, while restaurants and hotels operate with 3.011.

The report also details the jobs generated by this sector, which grew by 525 workers at the end of 2017 compared to 2016. The subsectors with more workers are those dedicated to fast food, with 30.338 people, and restaurants and hotels, with 20.676.

At the international level, the study of the AEF reflects that the hospitality and catering sector has 53 brands operating in 77 markets, with a total of 1.577 establishments, which makes it the second most exporting activity after fashion.

The president of the AEF, Luisa Masuet, notes that the data of the report reflect that the sector of catering and hospitality has "already overcome the years of crisis and is now in a stage of growth", with special attention to the sub-sectors of fast food , restaurants, hotels, ice cream and yoghurt parlours .
