Women constitute the 53% of the hospitality employment

The hospitality industry has a higher parity by genders in recruitment than other sectors, and the women's employment is ahead. In this sector there are 1.7 million workers and 906,600 are women, representing 53.1% of the total, compared to 46.9% of male employment, according to data from the INE's active Population Survey (EPA). The predominance of women is observed in a more pronounced way in the accommodation area, where the percentage rises to 59.2%, compared to the 51.2% that represents the female employment in the restoration activities.

Female employment increased by 3.6% in 2018 in the hotel sector, which means 31,525 occupied workers more than the previous year. The percentage evolution was the same in the two branches of hospitality, although in absolute terms it meant 22,950 employees more in restoration and 8,450 more in the activities of the accommodation.

In the last year, in the catering activities the male employment has increased more intensely than the female job, so the percentage of men and women has been approached, while in the accommodation sector it descended, with a greater distance between sexes.

  % Women % Men
HOSPITALITY 53,1 46,9
Catering 51,2 48,8
Accommodation 59,2 40,8

In the evolution of the last ten years, women have regained pre-crisis employment levels, with an increase of 11.3% in 2018 compared to 2008. Growth was uneven according to sub-sectors with a higher increase in the accommodation activities (30.2%) than in the catering (5.6%).

The 31.4% work part-time

Women remain majority in part-time contracts and represent the 31.4% of female employment, compared to the 17.4% in males. Moreover, the difference continues to widen with men, as while the latter continue to descend, women with this type of contract continue to increase, but at a lower rate than in previous years. Full-time workers increased at a higher rate than the previous year in both cases, although growth was more prominent in the case of male employment.

Men 662.125 7 139.050 -3
Women also represent a higher percentage of temporary work, the 39% of salaried women, compared to the 37.4% of men. However, the percentage by gender has been approached in 2018 as female temporary employment descended (-1%) while the male job increased by 4%.

The 15% are self-employed

The 15% of hospitality women are self-employed, which represents 143,900 people, with an increase of 5.8% compared to the previous year, in relation to 3.2% that increased salaried women. In the catering activities they represent a higher percentage (18.8%), compared to the 4.6% in the accommodation, although in 2018 in the latter subsector they increased more intensely (+23.4%).

Women are majority in all age ranges, except between 60 and 64 years in which there is a slight prevalence of men. The greater distance with men takes place in the group between 50 to 59 years, with an increase compared to the previous year of 12.5%, although the largest percentage increase took place among women between 16 and 19 years (16.1%). On the other hand, female employment descended between 25 and 29 years (-3.6%) and between 65 and 69 years (-7.1%).
